As well as all the broader goals of the IAJE worldwide, this committee aims to continue to promote the benefits of support and collegiality IAJE can offer.

If you live in WA and would like to develop jazz and jazz education wherever you are, please get involved.IAJE is all about people working together to make things happen for the better in their local area. We can all do far more as an association than as isolated individuals!

WA Schools Jazz Festival 2008 presented by Smarter than Smoking

In 2008, the festival will be held at Churchlands Senior High School on September 6 and 7. The aims of the festival are:

  • To give ensembles an opportunity to play in an outstanding venue.
  • To give ensemble members an opportunity to hear others perform.
  • To provide each ensemble with constructive comments from informed adjudicators.
  • To present to each ensemble a certificate which recognises its participation.

There are two ensemble categories in the festival. The Combo category is designed for smaller jazz groups with eight players or less. This is a great opportunity for advanced students or for schools having difficulty putting a together a larger ensemble. In the Full Ensemble category there are two divisions. The Senior division is aimed at more experienced, balanced ensembles. The Junior division is appropriate for bands performing level 1 or 2 music.

All bands will be provided with a digital recording of their performance with their adjudication comments.

Pro Photo Booth will be photographing ensembles at the conclusion of each performance. Individual portraits will also be offered. Parents are welcome to visit the photography area to purchase prints, which will be available for collection within minutes, or for later postal delivery. Order forms and pricing will be available at the venue.

Many prizes are awarded at the Festival for individual performers, sections and entire ensembles. These prizes have been generously donated by the IAJE, Theo’s Music, the Perth Jazz Society and the Jazz Club of WA.

This year will feature a guest performance by the Combined Government Schools Jazz Orchestra directed by Mr. Brian Copping, Mr. Lindsay Timms and Mr. Grant Rickman.

Can you help at the festival?
The IAJE welcomes anybody who is willing to give up a couple of hours to help on either day of the festival. This is a great way of hearing other schools’ bands and catching up with colleagues. Contact Brian Copping or Paul Duhig (see below) if you are interested. Do not hesitate to contact Brian Copping or Paul Duhig at the School of Instrumental Music on 9272 7800 or Paul.Duhig@det.wa.edu.au if you have any questions about the Jazz Festival.

Workshops with experienced clinicians are available for country schools that participate in the Festival. For further information check out the Festival website at: http://www.sim.iinet.net.au/jazzfest.html.
